Oppo Reno4 Review

by Community Manager ‎28-10-2020 12:13 PM - edited ‎28-10-2020 12:28 PM

My verdict: Oppo Reno4 is priced as a mid-tier device but Oppo made it as premium as it can be in all aspects.

The Design

Oppo Reno4 has a beautiful premium design. The Space Black colour option looks mesmerising with holographic pattern within a dark yet reflective blue gradient back cover. The phone looks good when placed on the table or when held in the hand.

Display

Oppo Reno4 has a large (and long) 6.4" AMOLED screen, a good quality display which is capable of displaying at high brightness with vivid colours.  It is capable of YouTube HDR and is also certified for Netflix HD streaming. For the nightowls, Oppo Reno4's AMOLED display is also capable of low brightness, allowing comfortable use before bedtime.

Oppo has kept the bezel slim by embedding sensors and 32MP selfie camera into a punch-hole. When the front camera is activated, a blue ring animation will surround the punch-hole; a premium touch from Oppo. The punch-hole has not affected my app and gaming experience, just like most modern-looking phone with punch-hole design.

Mobile Gaming

Oppo Reno4 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset. The 'G' denotes that the chip is designed for enhanced gaming experience.

This phone will handle all modern games from Mid to High graphics quality settings. From my experience, this phone will perform best on Mid graphics quality settings to avoid FPS drop during battles with highly complex scenes.

Thermal handling of Oppo Reno4 for gaming is perfect. Even after long gaming sessions, the device is merely warm on the top side and it remains comfortable to the grip. With 128GB UFS 2.1 storage and 8GB RAM, Oppo Reno4 is loading faster than most other players on multiplayer games.

Battery

Battery life has never been a worry with Oppo Reno4's 4015 mAH battery and 30W VOOC flash charge. Paired with a very efficient Snapdragon 720G chipset, Oppo Reno4 has been always able to get through the entire day comfortably even with hotspot tethering and gaming on-the-go.

VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 can save the day by charging the device from 1% to 50% in 20 minutes, if it ever runs out of juice.

Software

Oppo Reno4 is powered by ColorOS 7.2, based on Android 10. Oppo is still promptly updating the device. At the time of writing, the device has received October 2020 security updates.

ColorOS does come with bundled apps. Some of the apps are value adding, such as Oppo Lab, Oppo Relax (an app that playback soothing sounds), Soloop video editor. For those who does not enjoy the bundled apps, fortunately they can be uninstalled.

Camera

Oppo  Reno4 from its name, hints that there are 4 cameras on it (ultrawide, 48MP main camera, macro and mono camera). The photos that Oppo Reno4 produces are made to impress. The photos typically have high saturation, contrast and sharpness at a slight expense of details.

Here are photo samples from Oppo Reno, in comparison to iPhone SE (2020). Can you tell which belongs to Oppo Reno4?

Got a guess? 'A' belongs to Oppo Reno4 while 'B' belongs to iPhone SE (2020).  Since both devices are targeting mid-tier market, they both have their own merits. Oppo Reno4 has advantage of night mode and dedicated macro camera.
