Our dad, the ever masculine figure and protector of the family. An important figure in our lives that has worked to enable many great things that have happened to us, and all the things we’ve accomplished. This Father’s Day, let’s take a look at the many awesome traits that sum up a “typical asian dad”. Many of which we love and cherish. Check out all the little things that we truly appreciate growing up with our dads:
Teaching life skills the hard way
Tough love is something most of us have experienced growing up. You want it? You work for it. It can be a challenge at times but his parenting tactics will push us to great achievements that will pay off later in life. Safe to say, it has allowed us to explore our own capabilities and helped us to prepare for the future. It has also helped develop inner confidence that no one can ever take away (and maybe a little fear of asking dad for something free).
Designated cockroach killer
Hell hath no fury like encounters with a flying cockroach in the house. How will we ever survive without our dads volunteering as tribute? Unless you grew up with very tough love, a dad and his old rubber slipper is usually all it takes to protect the family from these horrifying pests.
RM10 for latte?! Kopitiam only RM3
Many of us have been widely exposed to western-influenced cultures, of which coffee being one of the first that was introduced to us. But no matter how much it has evolved, our kopitiam-loving dads will always go back to cham, kopi o, and other kopitiam classics. It teaches us to go back to our roots and appreciate a part of our Malaysian food culture, and it’s definitely much more wallet friendly. Plus, we bet that you don’t get the same rush that kopitiam coffee provides.
Mixing up your name with your sibling’s name
So….your dad mistakenly called you by your sibling’s name for the 100th time. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. In fact, this is more common than you think. It’s difficult enough that they need to keep up with their careers, the bills, being a husband and a personal plumber all at once. We gotta give it to them for juggling all this so swiftly. Mixing up our names is the smallest mistake we can easily forgive them for.
The Independent Dad...sort of….
Whenever we’re feeling a little feverish, dads will immediately advise us to visit a doctor and take better care of ourselves. Loveable as they can be, they sometimes forget to keep their own health in check. Drinking more water and doing a salt rinse is all they say they need. As we journey into adulthood, we need to realize that even superman needs protection from his people. As their children, it’s our duty to remind them that their well-being is just as important, and regular medical check ups are much encouraged.
