The iPhone, Throughout The Years

by Community Manager on ‎20-09-2019 03:37 PM

The biggest tech launch of the year is upon us.

As everyone in the world knows by now, Apple has announced not one, not two, but THREE new iPhone models this year. The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. With a new phone, comes new upgrades and better cameras!

But before we take a look at the new features, let’s look back at all the previous iPhone and remember how impressive they were back in their time.

The year is 2007.

The mobile landscape is dominated by Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson. And then Apple releases the iPhone. No physical keys. 3.5-inch display. 2.0-megapixel camera. An “app” store. The 1st iPhone turned out to be the pioneer and the invention that changed mobile phones into what it is today.

iPhone 4/iPhone 4S (2010-2011)

A new design and look.

A front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel back camera. Siri was introduced. The iPhone 4 was a huge success in the market, with over 600,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours. It also had the longest lifespan of any iPhone, spanning close to 4 years before production of the phone was stopped.

Here comes the lightning!

The iPhone 5 introduced the lightning cable, which is still being used to this day. The most defining phone of this generation was the 5C, it was released at a much lower price.

iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus/iPhone 6S/iPhone 6S Plus (2014-2015)

The best selling iPhones to date.

The iPhone 6 went curvy. Curved edges with a glass cover, the 6 gave the iPhone a more simple look, and less techy. The 6S’ camera was 12-megapixels and it introduced 3D touch, which is basically pressure-sensitive touch inputs.

iPhone 7/iPhone 7Plus/iPhone 8/iPhone 8Plus (2016-2017)

And then they removed the headphone jack.

Gone were the days of being able to connect your headphones physically. “Either you use a Bluetooth headphone or use our headphone jack adapter” screamed the iPhones. Sales dropped because of it. Another factor was the outdated and similar design. The fact that the 8Plus’ camera was still at 12-megapixel also didn’t help it.

iPhone X/iPhone XR/iPhone XS/iPhone XS Max (2017-2018)

The “notch” heard around the world.

When Apple did change up their design, it came with a polarizing feature. A notch at the top of the phone for the camera and the front-facing speakers. Face ID replaced Touch ID so people could just look at their screens and it would’ve been unlocked. Wireless charger was also a feature added in the iPhone X.

And here we are.

A third rear camera. Slo-fies. Ultra-wide lens. Super retina XDR display. The highest quality video capture in any smartphone. A13 Bionic chip. iOS13. And maybe more.
