Phase 4 has begun.

Kevin Feige appeared in Hall H during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel and revealed to the world the next step in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. New characters. New stories. New adventures. It was a sneak peek into the line-up for the new bunch of Avengers.

From Hawkeye’s own TV series to a Thor 4 movie, the panel gave fans a 2-year window of titles to get excited for. In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown of all the upcoming movies which have been confirmed.

Black Widow (1st May 2020)

"It's like Budapest all over again!"

It’s about time Scarlett Johansson had her own movie. She’s been in 7 different Marvel movies and is one of the earliest characters to appear in the MCU, disguising herself as Natalie Rushman in Iron Man 2.

With Black Widow having been sacrificed in Avengers: Endgame, the movie is set to be a prequel, before the whole Avenger initiative started. Shown footage of the movie seem to indicate that the plot will be surrounding what happened in Budapest, an inside joke shared by Hawkeye and Black Widow in the Battle of New York.

Does that mean Hawkeye is set to make an appearance in the movie? We won’t count it out.

Eternals (5th November 2020)

Eternals 1920x1080.png

Angelina Jolie AND Ma Dong-Seok in the same movie?!

Set to be the 25th movie in the MCU, Eternals already has a ridiculously star-studded cast. Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie. Golden Globe winner Richard Madden. Oscar nominees Kumail Nanjiani and Salma Hayek. And that is just half of the Eternals team.

Unless you’re an avid Marvel comic book fan, not many people know who the Eternals actually are. A race of immortal beings, they were created by the Celestials and have roamed the Earth since the beginning of time. And that’s pretty much all we know about the movie.

What we do know is that in the comics, Thanos was a member of the Eternals before being cast out. So maybe we’ll see a younger version of Thanos before he wanted to destroy half of the universe.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (12th February 2021)

Shang Chi 1920x1080.png

Marvel’s First-Ever Chinese Superhero.

Seems like Marvel is also going down the route of cultural appropriation. Visually modelled after the late martial artist Bruce Lee, Simu Liu is set to take on the role of Shang-Chi in early February 2021.

The Master of Kung Fu, Marvel is bringing quite literally bringing an unknown from the world of their comic into the MCU. Even strong comic book readers will struggle to tell you anything about him. With that being said, Shang-Chi is set to face up against the Mandarin, not the Iron Man 3 one, who will be played by Tony Leung.

Can Simu Liu turn Shang-Chi from just another comic book character into a fan favourite as Robert Downey Jr did with Iron Man? Only time will tell.

And speaking of “time”….

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (7th May 2021)

Dr Strange 2 1920x1080.png

Dr Strange and Scarlet Witch versus the Multiverse!

“Just because Quentin Beck makes up lies about the multiverse, doesn't mean it isn't real” is what Kevin Feige said about Dr Strange 2 before announcing the Multiverse of Madness. The movie is set to be Marvel’s first foray into the horror genre, with returning director Scott Derrickson having worked on Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose previously.

Taking place in the MCU after WandaVision, Scarlet Witch herself is cast to appear in the movie too. And an interesting thing to note is that the movie’s IMDB page has the storyline of the movie as “an old friend turned enemy”. Does that mean there’s a possibility of Scarlet Witch turning evil? Could the “Madness” be Wanda herself?

Thor: Love and Thunder (5th November 2021)

Thor 4 1920x1080.png

A female Thor?

The God of Thunder. With a dad bod.

Thor 4 is set as the last movie in Phase 4 and may actually be the most impactful for Phase 5 and beyond. Natalie Portman, aka Jane Foster, is back and has actually been confirmed as Mighty Thor, the female version of Thor. She appeared in Marvel’s panel at Comic-con and wielded the hammer, showing that she indeed is worthy.

Can we expect a scene of her and Thor himself partnering up together? We have already seen how awesome it was when Captain America wielded Mjolnir and Thor carried Stormbreaker in Avenger: Endgame. We wouldn’t be surprised if it did actually happen.
