July is here and it’s International Ice-Cream month! If you grew up in Malaysia, you’ll be very familiar with the jingles of the pak cik ais krim on their motorbikes making rounds in our neighbourhood and sometimes even parked outside our schools. To bring back some of those good childhood memories, we’ve round-up some of the most iconic ice-creams that will get your mouth watering.
MatKool has got to be one of the most top-of-mind ice-creams to date. Not just for their sweet ice cold treats, but also for the Matkool song we can all narrate word for word till this day. “MatKool MatKool kawanku…”
Remember this gem? These lime-flavoured little ice-pop balls were pure happiness and the cause of many brain freezes, the kind that we don’t mind. Unfortunately, they’ve discontinued solero shots and many are still wondering why. Hopefully, it’ll make a comeback one day!
An ice-cream stick with crazy pastel colours and oozes wholesome childhood fun. Thankfully for Paddle Pop fans, these are still easily accessible at your neighbourhood marts. And did you know? Till this day, Paddle Pops are still sold at RM1, the same as when they were first introduced to the market! Super duper yummy.
Ais Krim Potong
You’re not truly Malaysian if you’ve never had one of these. It has become so popular that even tourists from other countries buy back boxes as souvenirs. From cendol to corn to red bean and more, there’s a flavour for everyone!
Apple sourz Nestle
Apple Sourz has got to be a childhood favourite. Back then, school kids would save up their pocket money to get their hands on this gem. Guess you could say it gave some of us a taste of what it feels like to work hard for something we want. The icy exterior and jelly interior with bursts of apple goodness, what kid wouldn’t want that?
Last but not least, the Malaysian version of a snow cone, ais kepal! A ball of shaved ice smothered in sugary rose and gula melaka syrup. Best eaten the traditional way, held within the palm of your hand. And with the hot Malaysian weather, it’s all the more reason to get yourself this refreshing treat!
