by Community Manager on ‎05-03-2021 04:16 PM

We’re all about women empowerment this month and with International Women’s Day just around the corner, there are many ways to celebrate it! A day off with the girls wouldn’t hurt. Or a visit to your local hair salon for a glam-up sesh. OR, maybe even get yourself a new smartphone with Digi’s PhoneFreedom365. We’d choose the latter Smiley Wink

But if you’re in the mood to binge on some on-screen feminism who #ChooseToChallenge, here we have a compilation of inspiring films that celebrate independence, perseverance, success and with that all women possess in them!

Best Movie about Sisterhood

Family is everything, and Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women had won many hearts and awards! This is a film where the whole of the talents successfully portrayed a story about sisterhood and everything in between - the good and the bad, and a mother who taught her children to be together always in times of pain, happiness, and sacrifices. It was well-casted, award-winning, and so thoughtfully directed. Girls, you HAVE TO add this one to your to-watch list!

Best Movie about How Perseverance Breaks Through All Challenges

One does not need to dig far into the internet to find controversial issues in today’s education system. Miss Virginia, a true-life drama about Virginia Walden Ford (Uzo Aduba), a single mother in Washington D.C. turned activist. When she couldn’t afford to send her son to a private school, she took up a fight with the education system that has been mistreating minority children for decades (yaaaass queen!). It’s spot-on in highlighting modern struggles and how Virginia’s perseverance can go through lengths. We hope this powerful-humbled woman will inspire many and hustle for future generations!

Best Animated Film to Watch on Netflix

My Neighbour Totoro, this classic anime follows two girls - Mei and Satsuki and their father, spending a summer in the countryside. Then encounter a big fuzzy creature named Totoro which happens to be a spirit. What makes this film so special, is that it perfectly blends the joy of being a kid with a really adult theme. It’s one of those that will have you smiling silly and to watch the pure love between both sisters and their parents is just heartwarming. Advice: Grab your plushie to cuddle with for this one.

Best Movie to Make You Wanna Call Your BFF

The Sisterhood of Travelling Pants” is as its title states. Aside from the mythical one-pair-of-jeans-that-fits-all-body-types, the bond between these girls is very, very real indeed. The story spans a summer vacation and we get to see how each of the 4 mature while apart.  Friendships are tested, mended, and rejuvenated through their love for each other, and a pair of pants. Word.

If learning something new is your jam, you should really check out “Li Ziqi” on Youtube. A vlogger based in China who makes everything from scratch. The food she puts on the table, handicrafts, and even functional kitchen equipment like a wood-fire oven. Literally EVERYTHING! There are thousands of cooking tutorials on the internet, but Li Ziqi stands out because she documents the whole process from planting, harvesting, cooking, and she does them all single-handedly. Ya’ll know her as the smart, funny, Canadian-born Youtube Star that only speaks the #truth! Lilly Singh, also known as Superwoman has one of the highest numbers of subscribers in the Youtube world. Her popularity grew through content about daily struggles that people can relate to in a comical way. You can check out her channel here. She also encourages female empowerment through #GirlLove Challenge, in which women are encouraged to post compliments of another woman on their social media with the hashtag #GirlLove. This came about when Superwoman highlighted the issues surrounding girl-on-girl hate, and so this challenge was created to spread love, and only love.
