Thank you for your feedback. We surely have weight the pros and cons while deciding on the the default option. Anyhow,  it's easy to just swap option between email & mobile no by selecting the option.

At the login page, click 'Switch to phone' to log in the Community with the phone number registered to CONNECT :-)
