Beware of SMS and Call Scams

by whysee SuperUser on ‎27-04-2016 03:36 PM - edited on ‎29-05-2017 02:13 PM by Marshie SuperUser

These days, you can never be too safe, especially when it comes to your mobile phone! You may have heard from a friend or family member, who was charged exorbitant rates for making calls to international or unknown numbers.

Always beware of the types of calls or SMSes that could come your way:

So, what should you do if you receive calls or texts from unknown numbers? The simple and quick answer would be: Do NOT call  back or reply.

Calling numbers with these prefixes: e.g. numbers starting with +216, +242, +247, +371, +58, +77, +78, +881, or any other unknown/international number that seems odd, could result in high charges in your phone bill.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  1. Always save the phone number of your friends and family members living overseas, so you won’t be confused when you receive a missed call or SMS from an unknown international number.
  2. If you happen to answer the scammer’s call from an international number, you will not be charged unless you are currently roaming and the feature is turned on.
  3. If you send an SMS to the unknown international number, you will be imposed with International SMS Charges. Always check first before replying.
  4. If you receive anything fishy, and are unsure about it, just give us a call on our Helpline at 012 2211 800!

Share this with your friends and family, and stay safe!
